Biloxi, about 40 miles southeast of Mint Julep Airpark, offers a quality of life unmatched in the Deep South. The wonderful climate of Biloxi promotes year round recreation. In addition to more than public golf courses open year round, and scores of charter boats, Biloxi also supports five multi-purpose community centers, 28 parks, 13 baseball and softball fields, four soccer fields (with more planned). There are also 3 gymnasiums, thirteen tennis courts, a senior citizen center and public fishing piers throughout. Biloxi also hosts an Olympic-size, year-round natatorium — the only one in the state.
The Community and Economic Development Department administers seven museums, among them the unique Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum and theGeorge E. Ohr Arts and Cultural Center. The Saenger Theatre for the Performing Arts houses the Gulf Coast Opera and the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra.
Biloxi is one of the safest cities in the south. Gaming tax revenues have encouraged the city to add 50-60 officers to its police force and to purchase more than 80 new police cruisers. A network of computers now effectively administers the Police Departments crime-fighting programs. The City Fire Department is the best trained in the state and also has some of the newest state-of-the-art equipment. The city currently mans six stations throughout the city.
